Californians are a unique breed. For instance, one of the latest buzzes in
planning circles is "mixed use." The idea is to have businesses on one level
with living quarters above; be they apartments, condos or lofts.
My grandfather was a tailor. He had his shop downstairs, while he and my
grandmother resided above. That was in the 1950s, which is as far back as my
early memories go. This "mixed use" has been a standard of living on the east
coast for years, not to mention hundreds of years in Europe.
Now that California is catching up and recognizing that there is more to life
than sprawl, possibly we will create affordable and dependable public
transportation? Please hurry. I'm getting old and only have a couple of hundred
years left! --
